    Following the Asterisk

The last time we checked in with the asterisk, The Milwaukee Journal found it hoovering over Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' name.

Now the Washington Post has found the asterisk over George Bush's Iraq Argument from his Veteran's Day speech.

It is worth taking note that the Washington Post wasn't interested in challenging the weeks of "Bush lied" arguments by the Democrats, but decided to roll up their sleeves once the President finally spoke out.

In summary the asterisks they found are basically the notion that the intelligence Congress had access to did not include the full spectrum, such as the PDB's or Presidential Daily Briefs, which are classified.  This is a fair point, but I think I speak for most of those on the right when I say that this "phase 2" investigation is welcomed and should be encouraged.  Based on what we are hearing from people who would know, the case made by the PBD's was even more damning againt Iraq and the Democrats will have a very hard time spinning what the PBD's reveal into "Bush lied".  But by choosing this path, the Democrats get to extend the debate, while dangling the "Bush lied" arguments across the media in the meantime.

Meanwhile, Dan Froomkin of the Washingtoin Post tries to hide behind the same Washington Post article to agrue that "the charge that [Bush] intentionally misled the public in the run-up to war is built on a growing amount of evidence."  That giant sucking sound you hear is Paul at Powerline taking the hot air out of Foomkin's argument like a pin to an over-inflated blow-up doll.

Many of us have been wondering why the Democrats think they can get away with this baseless "Bush Lied" argument.  Lorie Byrd of Polipundit (no relation to Senator Robert Byrd (D-KKK)) offers a very good explanation of why the Democrats thought they would get away with it.

UPDATE:  Dan Froomkin responds to Paul's criticism by saying:

it was not the existence of Iraqi WMD in general that the public is feeling so misled about....More likely, it was the threat that Saddam might provide al Qaeda or other terrorist groups with nuclear weapons in particular -- hyped by the Bush administration despite the lack of reliable specific intelligence -- that launched the public stampede toward war.
Right.  Dan tries to dodge the criticism with this?  Perhaps like most Democrats he suffers from long term memory loss and forgot that it was Bush's opponent, John Kerry who said the following:

"I would disagree with John McCain that it’s the actual weapons of mass destruction he may use against us, it’s what he may do in another invasion of Kuwait or in a miscalculation about the Kurds or a miscalculation about Iran or particularly Israel. Those are the things that - that I think present the greatest danger. He may even miscalculate and slide these weapons off to terrorist groups to invite them to be a surrogate to use them against the United States. It’s the miscalculation that poses the greatest threat."
John Kerry, CBS’ "Face The Nation," 9/15/02

Maybe that giant sucking sound was really Dan's journalistic integrity escaping to somewhere South of sanity.

UPDATE 2:  Paul responds to Froomkin's rebuttal
