A very big disappointment and an opportunity wasted.

 

As Paul points out at Powerline, Bush just thumbed his nose at conservatives by offering up a 60-year old with no judicial experience. and with no credentials towards being a strict constructionist.

 

I am witholding some judgement until I can learn more, but at the moment I am strongly inclined to strongly oppose this nomination when so many other strong candidates were available.

 

I can appreciate that there may be political considerations and that Bush may feel weakened by recent events, but why try to sneak in a stealth noninee without solid credentials?  Bush could have nominated Janice Rodgers Brown -- an African American female who was just recently approved to the DC Appeals Court.  Democrats would have a hard time explaining why they oppose her after recently approving her.  Michael Luttig would have also been a strong choice.  An opportunity to strengthen the rule of law and democratic process against judicial tyranny has been wasted.
